And the short-answer question for the discussion board is, "Can you think of a time that you would choose not to use a technological innovation?"

Kinja'd!!!

My answer:

The only time I could think of not using a technological innovation is while driving. I love cars, and I think that cars are better now than they've ever been. People often talk of the "golden age," of American muscle cars and reminisce about how legendarily fast those cars are. The fact is that those vehicles are highly inefficient and nowhere near as fast as your uncle Bill says they were. A new V6 Honda Accord, right off the lot, is faster and handles better than a 302 Boss Mustang. Not only that, but it also can seat four adults in comfort and uses about half as much fuel as the old Ford. However, if I had the choice of the two vehicles to take up on a day trip through the mountains, I'd take the Mustang. It's more raw and visceral. The Accord is nice, but to drive all one needs to do is point the wheel and press the gas. With the Mustang, there's the tension of the clutch, the rumble of the exhaust, the slight vibration of the steering wheel and shifter just as you tickle the redline, and the sense of danger that only comes from driving a powerful car with poor traction. The Ford is an experience and that's why I would choose it.

Looks good, but I think you should also name the specific technologies you're not using in older cars.

I would just answer "automatic trans".

You know, I have never written about cars for any school assignments. I don't know why, but I just feel weird if teachers read it.

HOW DARE YOU!?

Seriously though I try and work cars in EVERY assignment I do. And for the most part I am successful!

Auto vs Manual

Where auto is dumification, and a manual keeps you connected mentality with the car. You are engaging both hands & both feet, instead of the minimal one of each.

One may also enjoy a manual if they are a control freak.

Jeez, it seemed like cars had to be in every HS paper of mine.

Wouldn't all of the things the Mustang has still be considered techncal innovations? In reference to the new Accord they're not, but in reference to walking they certainly are. I'm not ragging on you, just playing devil's advocate. This is a question I might pose to my students. Maybe think a bit deeper into the question and see if you can find a scenario where you would forgo all technical innovation.

(I'm a 36-year-old man who is now a sophomore in college and has a collection of 18 hot wheels cars on his desk.)

Fantastic answer!

I did a whole paper in college about a Corvette (it was a science and tech Lit class, so it made sense).

I lost points at certain parts of the paper because the professor had no idea what I was talking about, I got too technical.

I know, I know, I just don't want it to look as if I strayed off topic. Also, the prompts they use to give us assignments could never relate to vehicles...

Nope, I cant, the assignments I am forced to do could never include cars in them. It just wouldn't make sense.

I'm pretty sure I give out accidental extra credit every time students mention cars in assignments for me.
